What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps - also known as caterpillar fungus - is a fungus that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat many ailments, to enhance physical performance and as an effective aphrodisiac.

Widely unknown in the Western world, cordyceps aroused the interest of athletes and scientists in the early 1990s, after top Chinese athletes, who used this mushroom to increase their athletic performance, had set several world records within a very short time.

Numerous scientific studies that have been conducted since then and these studies have shown that Cordyceps can not only promote athletic performance and muscle gains, but also has a variety of health benefits that athletes and non-athletes alike can benefit from.

What advantages does Cordyceps have for athletes?

A number of human studies have shown that Cordyceps can significantly increase your athletic performance through a range of different mechanisms. In addition to this it can also promote and accelerate your muscle growth and your post workout recovery.

This begins with an increased ATP production (1). ATP is known as the "energy currency" of your body. This is the molecule that provides your muscles with the energy they need for intense muscular effort.

In addition, several studies have shown that Cordyceps can significantly increase your VO2 max and your endurance within a few weeks (2, 3, 4, 5). The VO2 max is an important marker for your athletic performance and your fitness level. This was accompanied by an increased lactate threshold (4), which is a measure of the maximum exercise effort that can be sustained over a longer period of time without fatigue.

For strength athletes and bodybuilders, it may also be interesting to note that a number of studies have shown that Cordyceps can significantly increase the levels of the male sex hormone, which is also the primary muscle-building hormone of the human body (6, 7, 8, 9, 10). During exercise processes associated with the energy metabolism will inevitably produce large amounts of free radicals that can damage or even destroy muscle cells and the DNA of your cells.

The powerful antioxidants contained in cordyceps can neutralize these free radicals, which will not only protect your muscle cells from damage, but can also significantly speed up and improve your post-workout recovery. This is further supported by the fact that cordyceps has pronounced anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve exercise-induced inflammatory responses (16, 17, 18, 19).
